Fashion Tips for the 40+ Woman

Fashion Tips for the 40+ WomanIf you’re a female 40 or older, following are some timeless fashion tips:

Fashion Advice Tip #1: Observe body changes: As you get older, your body changes. Even though many say that 40 is the new 30, unless you are one of the genetically blessed, I don’t care how much you work out, your body is going to change.

Those changes can vary from wider hips, to sagging boobs to growing arm flaps (you know, when you wave goodbye and your hand is not the only thing moving).

How do you handle the change? Take wardrobe inventory. What was working on your old body may not be working now.

Does sleeveless still work for you? is your skirt line below your cellulite line (eg, does the skirt cover the cellulite)? Can you still get away with horizontal stripes.

Take wardrobe inventory ladies! It’s imperative.

Fashion Advice Tip #2: Makeup: Many of us wear the same makeup for years (ahem, I heard that this was true; it is definitely not a habit I adhere too, or at least one I willing to admit that I do).

The rule is, the older you get, the lighter and more natural you go – on hair color, lipstick, mascara, blush. While a 20-year old can pull of the kohl-rimmed eyed, Goth look (barely!), raccoon eyes only highlight wrinkles.

Like dandruff falling on a black shirt, excessively dark makeup and hair coloring will exacerbate every flaw you have.

Makeup is supposed to accentuate, not cover up; it is supposed to highlight your natural beauty, not repel.

Hopefully, the older you grow the more comfortable you feel with all of your flaws — perceived and real. And, the less you will feel the need to try to hide anything.

Natural colors that complement your skin tone are what you should stock up on.

So, drag out that makeup bag and take inventory. Have you been wearing the same lipstick for the last five years; the same mascara color, have the same hair color and hair style?

Recommendation: Visit a professional makeup counter; let the makeup artist there do your makeup and suggest the types and colors of makeup you should be purchasing. You don’t have to necessarily buy their products, but at least you’ll know what color family to be looking in, what types of moisturizers you should be using, what type of foundation, etc.

Then, you can find complementary products in a lower-priced brand.

Fashion Advice Tip #3: Wardrobe Musts: Every female over 40 should have at least the following in her wardrobe – I don’t care what her lifestyle is.

Wardrobe fashion tip a): Black Dress. And no, it doesn’t have to be little, ie, “a little black dress.” It should be functional enough that it can go from a business meeting to a club/lounge.

This staple can carry you through funerals, cocktail parties and business lunches. Pair it with a nice jacket for business/formal occasions. Drape a shawl or beaded sweater over it for evening.

It’s what I call the “no think” dress. It’ll serve you well on many, many occasions.

Wardrobe fashion tip b): Black Leather Pumps. To go with the above.

Wardrobe fashion tip c): Functional Flats.: These can be ballet slippers, a la Audrey Hepburn in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”, or simple, low-heeled pumps.

Keep them polished and scuff-free.

Wardrobe fashion tip d): Cream silk blouse. Why cream? Because it goes with everything, and as you’ll see from the list below, you can pair it with so much and look great with minimal effort.

Wardrobe fashion tip e): Black Purse. Again, to go with the above. Make it can an all-purpose bag, eg, one that can go from day to evening seamlessly. Usually, a 50s-style clutch works best.

Wardrobe fashion tip f): Jacket. Get a high-quality one in a staple color, eg, black, navy, tan, etc., so that you can pair it with a business suit or jeans and look equally fabulous.

Wardrobe fashion tip g): Jeans. Speaking of jeans, every female should have a pair of decent jeans (eg, no holes or patches) that she can dress up or down.

Put them on with pumps or functional flats and a jacket for dress-down Fridays, or pair them with your flip-flops for a walk along the beach.

Wardrobe fashion tip h): Pearls. These are timeless. I like double and triple strand pearls. They make formal wear and casual wear elegant and timeless.

Wardrobe fashion tip i): Coat. Two of these – one for fall/winter and one for spring summer.

Although most women lead very different lives, these staples will carry you through whatever you face during your day. http://www.articleonramp.com/ Yuwanda Black is the publisher of InkwellEditorial.com: THE business portal for and about the editorial and creative industries.
